Free VST Plugins are one of the most exciting things about mixing. In the past it was impossible to imagine that so many quality tools could be available at no cost. Today there are more great free plugins than ever before, but the freeware scene is always changing. VST plug-in paths: Enter a path here, or click the Add button to browse to the directory that contains your VST plug-ins. Multiple directories may be added to this list.
REAPER user Khatcha send me an email today with a tip to help those on Windows that found some of their VST plugins were tiny after the REAPER 6.0 upgrade. Screen grab utility.
A VST plugin is a software-based audio effect or a virtual instrument intended for use in a host program that supports Virtual Studio Technology. Most digital audio workstations nowadays can load VST and VST3 plugins. VST plugins are used to expand a virtual music studio, much like how hardware effects and instruments are utilized in a real studio. REAPER supports a vast range of hardware, digital formats and plugins, and can be comprehensively extended, scripted and modified. Do Anything REAPER's full, flexible feature set and renowned stability have found a home wherever digital audio is used: commercial and home studios, broadcast, location recording, education, science and research.
I’d like to give a useful tip concerning the version 6.xx on Windows only and it’s about the issue with plugins scaling on 4K monitors (or probably less).
With this recent version of Reaper, all my plugins were drastically shrunk and it was impossible to work with such a small UI resolution.
I tried to find the problem with the Advanced UI/ System Tweaks on Reaper but that didn’t help me.

I even tried to change some parameters in the Theme development options but it was unsuccessful. Virtual piano midi.
I finally found the issue, I’ll give to you so you can spread it better than me :
- Go to the properties of the file “reaper.exe” (ALT+ENTER shortcut or Right-Click on the file and select “Properties”) and go to the “Compatibility” tab.
- Click on “Change Hi DPI Settings” and you will have 3 options: Application, System and System Enhanced. Switch to System or System Enhanced et voila!

Of course, keep in mind that REAPER 6 is very new and these things are likely to change and improve in the coming months. Reporting your experience to the official forum with your system info, problem plugins, settings and workarounds is the only way things can improve for all.
The 6.02 update has some changes in this regard, Justin sent me a message on Twitter.
6.02 has a per-plug-in setting to allow the floating FX to be hidpi-unaware. Or you can go to preferences/general/advanced settings, and change the HiDPI Awareness mode to “Unaware” (which makes the behavior match 5.x).
Justin FrankelIf you try this workaround, let us know in the comments if it worked for you as well.

Reaper Vst Plug-ins
VST Plugin Settings | |
---|---|
Auto Detect | Click this button to make REAPER scan your system to detect VST plug-ins. |
VST plug-in paths | Enter a path here, or click the Add button to browse to the directory that contains your VST plug-ins. Multiple directories may be added to this list. Separate each directory with a semicolon. |
Rescan directory | Click this button to force REAPER to rescan your VST directory(s). |
Clear cache and rescan directory | Click this button to clear the plug-in cache and force REAPER to build a new list of VST plug-ins. |
Get VST plug-in names/types when scanning | By default, REAPER retrieves the full plug-in name and type when scanning. Clear this check box to prevent this behavior. What does this mean? Well, if you have this option enabled, it will take much longer to scan your VST plugins, as it scans them, and initializes each one, thereby increasing the likely hood of a buggy VST to crash REAPER. However, if you do not have it on, it will not differentiate between VST effects and instruments, and will put them all in the same folder (you will be able to use them just the same however, they will just show up differently). |
Save full VST plug-in state if supported (recommended) | By default, REAPER saves the full VST plug-in state if the plug-in supports this function. Clear this check box to prevent this behavior. |
Save as bank (larger config data, required by some plug-ins) | Entry Here |
Avoid restoring VST state on undo/redo if possible | Select this check box if you are having issues with VST plug-ins reloading patches when using the Undo function in REAPER. |
Default VST configuration windows to generic UI (instead of plug-in UI | This gives you the option to view by default the generic VST window in REAPER instead of the plug-ins original GUI. Here is an example: Plug-in GUI: (courtesy of Antress' Analoger VST plugin) Generic UI of the same plugin: |
Better buggy processReplacing compatibility mode (slower) | Selecting this check box may provide compatibility with poorly coded or older VST plug-ins, but will also increase the CPU overhead of REAPER. |
Don't flush synthesizer plug-ins on stop | In general this should be unchecked, unless you have plug-ins that don't handle the mainschanging right (some SynthEdit based ones reload all of their samples for example). |
Inform plug-ins of offline rendering state | This enables REAPER to 'tell' plugins that have the ability to 'hear' that it's rendering, and if the vst(i) has the feature, it will usually up the quality for render (Voxengo plugins do this, so does Image-Line's Sytrus and Fxpansion's BFD). |
Don't flush UAD-1 plug-ins on stop (helps avoid native CPU munch) | This option prevents the UAD-1 from taking too much native cpu. |
